Proper Treatment

Alright so I've fixed up my treatment to the sample posted on Blackboard. It definitely helped doing this because I've figured out how I want to do most of the transitions now, I've also got some concept art I've been working on although it's not 100% how I want it to look, But I'll upload those later.

Treatment

The Bucket List
The Bucket List is a student animation to be created by solely myself (James Hardman-Cobb). It is a motion graphic about the things we want to do before we die.

The Bucket List functions not as a narrative but rather as a concept of sorts. The goal of the video is to get the audience to reflect on what items are on their lists. This will be achieved through animated versions of the list items with careful consideration of transitions between items. The video will end with a shot of the words, “What’s on Yours?”

As mentioned earlier TBL follows motion graphic styling. What I mean by this is that colors will be sharp and blending will be smooth. Objects will be simplified down to their most important elements. Some of the pictures below illustrate a similar style to what I am going for.
The First two are from the blog of WeThinkThings
The Second two are from Colin Hesterly’s World of Motion.

Both have a simpler style with very nice color flow. I will post some videos at the end of the treatment as well. The character is a blank icon that will have different items of clothing in various shots or list items.
As far as technical aspects go, the video will make use of After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, and either Flash or ToonBoom. The latter two programs will be used for character animation, Whereas everything else will be used for objects and background. Each list item will be broken down into its own scene lasting roughly 10 seconds although these times will be adjusted for more complex list items.
Audio will comprise of a background music track that matches the feel-good tone of the video. I would like to match the audio to the animation in a similar method to the World of Motion video although that will be a secondary concern for now
Costs will be minimal for I will be using software available in the edit lab although I may purchase the ToonBoom program that Professor Silva mentioned.
The Bucket List is a short animation focusing on the things we want to do before we die. It is primarily focused on visuals and the transitions between visuals. The audio will be a simple feel good song to complement the graphics.

First Post!

Alrighty then, this is the beginning of my blog for my senior seminar project. My project will an animated short about a bucket list. So far I have researched bucket lists and pulled a lot of the most common items together as well as put in some of my own. I'll put the list on at the end of this post. I am thinking of combining hand-drawn animation as well as After Effects and Illustrator. The plan is to use hand-drawn techniques (probably Flash) for the character and AE and Illustrator for the back ground and the effects. As of now there isn't a story it is more focused on the visual style and effects but I am not 100% settled on leaving it this way. The motion graphics I have been drawing inspiration from are for the most part 2 minutes or less. My main worry is that 3 minutes without any sort of story will get boring after a while unless there is a lot of variety. As of right now there are about 20 items on the list although I may change some of them as time goes. As I am more concerned with visuals than story the will be a big focus on transitions. I will pay special attention to them in order to make them fluid and to give the whole video a nice flow from start to finish.
List Items:
1.       Travel the World
2.       Go Sky Diving
3.       Drive a Classic Car
4.       Climb a Mountain
5.       Plant a Flag Somewhere
6.       See the Northern Lights
7.       Win a Race
8.       Ride in a Hot Air Balloon
9.       Ride a Mechanical Bull
10.   Ride in a Submarine
11.   Go to a Drive-in Movie Theater
12.   Paint a House
13.   Go Surfing
14.   See a Fireworks Show
15.   Get a Tattoo
16.   Run with the Bulls
17.   Kick a Door Open
18.   Ride a PennyFarthing
